April 28 - Pushing at the Edges

Narcisse Diaz De La Pena - Fontainblelau Forest

Pushing the Edges

I think we all get at life from the edges;
Pressing hard near the fences and the hedges.
The boundaries that keep us both out and in. So,
It depends which way you've set your mind to go,
As to whether you wind up where you first intended
Or found some other place where your story could have ended.

Anyway, only a bit of life is lived deliberately,
Most of it's more unfocused, much ado done vigorously,
And though it takes you roughly in your general direction,
Near enough that with the occasional course correction
You get somewhere that it was your original intention
To go had you chosen better and paid a great deal more attention.

I take the blame, though not without some reservation,
For though the roads turned, they were not themselves causation
Not entirely, for I could have gone a different way instead.
And sometimes I chose well, but sometimes I, the signs, misread.
Then it was stumbling through the brush, half-blind, trying hard to seize
Upon a beaten forest path I could not see from here - down among the trees.

Were we not promised accompaniment along this dusky path?
Were there not with us angels standing by to shield us from the wrath
Of forces cold, malevolent, hungry, utterly ill-intentioned?
Did we not feel evil press our edges, wolves best left unmentioned,
Lest they become substantial, too real to ignore, too hard to bear
Pressing us onto dark paths we had never really known were there?

Still, the light has kept pace for all this time that we have stumbled,
Forward, picking up our steps, while overhead the thunder rumbled.
And as we draw near the place to which our journey long has wended,
And glance back across our shoulders toward places where the light has ended,
It's harder as we take each step to feel regret for fences and the hedges
For we'd not be the one's we are without, we'd gently pressed the edges.

April 29 - Bridge Builder

Bridge-Builder

I remember how that bridges
Always held an utter fascination
When I was just a bootless boy
With ample time and much imagination.
When I would with building blocks, Erector sets,
Hunks of stone, woodpile scraps and slivers,
Litter the house with rickety bridges
That spanned imaginary rivers.

It was the barriers I suppose
That I never really liked,
Always in the way of where I wished to go,
Barring every quiet trail I hiked.
Rivers invited me to build canoes.
Gullies, ravines defied me to try
To traverse intricacies of knots and rope,
Some book had taught me how to tie.

In the intervening years I’ve built
More bridges than I care to say
Some well used. Others, not so much.
It does not matter anyway.
You are not required to always cross
Every bridge encountered everywhere.
Bridge-builders do not mind, just so.
If a bridge is wanted, it is there.

That’s all I really wanted all along.
To leave behind me crossings that abide
A string of bridges, spanning barriers
Paths by which to reach the other side.
I hope that God will leave some rivers
When he makes the Earth anew.
Chasms I can throw a span across;
And places I can build a bridge or two.

April 29 - The Pickle Conundrum

The Pickle Conundrum

Sweet relish and kosher dills
Sour pickles, sweet gherkins
Dill gherkins, bread and butters
Refrigerator pickles

Pickled peppers, pickled plums,
Pickled onions, green tomatoes
Tsukemonos and slippery Jacks
Pickled and Polish dills

German dills, half-sour pickles
Lime pickles and koolickles
Watermelon rind pickles, pickled beets
Pickled okra and asparagus

Garlic dills and spicy dills
Cabbage pickles, pickled carrots
Mango pickles, pickles deep fried
Sweet and dill pickle chips

A sandwich with pickles
Is a beautiful thing
But how do you choose
Which goes on the bread?

April 7 - Pruning

Pruning

I didn't know about azaleas
  or roses, blackberries, lilacs or crape myrtles
They need to be pruned;
  a good gardener knows when and which ones.
Some are pruned after they bloom
  those which grow the best on new wood.
Some before the blossoms appear because they grow
  the best along stems of old wood.

The trick is knowing the flower;
  When it blooms and how it grows;
Where to plant and whether to clip the blossoms
  or if you should let them go ahead and make seeds and fruit.
The gardener knows the plants he has tended;
  watered, fertilized and trimmed as needed.
The Gardener knows the plant and how best to make it grow and bloom.
  Unlike the plants we must also know and trust the gardener.

I Stand for a Moment

by Tom King

I stand for a moment
     On the edge of a dream,
Wondering what has brought me here.

Was it cold, hard facts
     Or the insistent whisper
Of tomorrow in my ear?
