April 11 - Stumbling Toward Jerusalem
Stumbling Toward Jerusalem
We lie awake at night listening
to the thumping of veins in our heads
and make lists of all the things
we're sure we've left undone.
At the early end of day, we rise
stumbling out into the snow
or drizzle or on the odd occasion
a golden morning complete with birdsong.
We are stumbling toward Jerusalem
a city made of gold, not because
the city planners are showing off
but because gold makes good paving stones.
Our feet are tired and stones and sticks
get in our way and trip us up
and sometimes we stumble over
the companions who accompany us along the road.
But if we trust in Him who built the road
and strewed our path with obstacles and chasms to be bridged,
He will send us boon companions
of the best sort for stumbling over.
