April 17: Uncle Johnny says, "Take it!"

Uncle Johnny Says, "Take it."

Uncle Johnny played guitar well into his nineties.
The whole family brings their instruments to reunions,
Guitars, dreadnoughts, steel guitars, mandolins, and fiddles.
They even let me bring my banjo, though I am but an in-law.
Bluegrass is the preferred genre, though Hank Williams
Shows up in the mix sometimes when they get going.
This impromptu band will stop once in a while as if by some secret cue,
One of them will point at someone, seemingly at random,
And shout, "Take it!" and the hapless cousin on the end of that finger point,
Must play the riff he's been practicing for years and while looking at the ceiling
Nonchalantly, make his fingers fly up and down the frets.

I've never been that good a musician. I play banjo because it's colorful,
And hardly anyone else in the group plays one well enough to put me to shame.
To my horror during one family jam session, Uncle Johnny, meaning well,
Pointed straight at me and said to me, "Take it!"
What followed was 20 seconds of the opening sequence of "Dueling Banjos"
Followed by an awkward silence from the room as I stumbled over the fast bit.
Mercifully, my new relations, many of whom remembered the first time
That Dad or grandpa or one of the uncles pointed at them and commanded,
    "TAKE IT!"
My wife's kindly relations, that day, quickly covered for my incompetence.
With a big burst of musical competence, with a distinct bluegrass flair.
Since then, I've been working on some kind of riff in the key of  "G"
So, I'm ready if they ever call on me again, I have my own riff ready.
On the out chance one of them points at me and says, "Take it!"
Bluegrass is almost always in G and if it's not, I keep a copy of the key changes"
You get when you strap on a capo to my longneck banjo.
But in the meantime I pray they don't forget that Tom don't "take it."
I hard down love these dear country folk and their music
With which they graciously invited me to come and live amongst them.

April 4 - Berry Cobbler on the Hoof

Berry Cobbler on the Hoof
by Tom King

Down our gravel lane on a summer day,
In the Pacific Northwest another late growing season.
Pink and white blooms scattered among prickly vines,
That some Washingtonians consider weeds,
But I'm from Texas, a veteran berry picker,
So I recognize blackberry cobbler on the hoof.
Well worth the bleeding and purple stained fingers.
And every summer along our vine strewn driveway,
We gather infant berry cobblers for the winter.

They Jump Out at You Like That

They Jump Out at You Like That

I’ve got one of those electronic picture frames.
You set it on your desk
Or hang it on your wall,
And it parades old pictures across the screen.
Patiently all day long.
Moments from the foggy  past -
Things lying half-forgotten till you see them once again.
And they catch your eye,
And you catch your breath,
As some half-forgotten moment lights up places in your brain
Laid down long ago,
When your world was younger,
When you were busier going  about life and didn’t know
You were making memories
That would rush back at you,
And sit you down in your rocking chair to weep a little.

April 15 - Not Quite Just Like Me

Not Quite Just Like Me\

My brother's the guy in the middle.
With the Green Deal hat....

We're brothers. We're built much alike
Long torso, short legs; the scions of Weebles
We walk alike. Our voices are like Dad's.
But Mikey's a man of the peoples.

Outside one can tell we both share a name.
But we're both kind of different within.
My brother's a lefty; a leader in fact,
An Occupy guy to the skin.

He marches where I wouldn't ever
With peace flags and a fuzzy pink hat.
I'm a blogger and conservative pundit.
Politically we're different like that.

I'm not quite sure how that happened.
As siblings we're an interesting mix.
I lean right. I've got conservative values.
I think he leans left for the chicks.

We hooked up a while there on Facebook,
But my comments he never quite grokked.
So brother of mine, it was great while it lasted,
But for now, I'm apparently blocked.

April 27 - Comfort Food

Comfort Food

Sometimes you just need
Food that tastes like home,
Flavors you share with someone else,
Smells that make you smile.

I used to think that
What you ate was not important.
I was wrong about that.
The smells sneak up on you.

Smells that take you back to places,
You’d forgot you’d left behind;
A joy that all of us,
In the family share it.

Daisy's Brown Eyes Shining

Daisy's Brown Eyes Shining

She ate my sock again today
A gesture that was meant with true affection.
Brown eyes looked up at me for sign
That I approved what lovingly was meant.
And when I barked in my gruff style
She cut those dark brown shining eyes at me
A sadder thing you will not see
A dog's regret for unintended crimes.
